Robin Williams would still be 'alive if Christopher Reeve was still around', film star says

Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams were known to have an extremely close friendship, and in a new documentary celebrating the life of The Superman actor, one film star claims the Dead Poets Society actor would ‘still be around’ if Reeve was.

The Hollywood actor sadly passed away in 2014 by suicide, ten years after Christopher Reeve suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. Reeve’s death came nine years after he became paralyzed after a spinal cord injury from a horseback riding accident, in 1995.

The documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan 21, and includes many interviews looking back on the life and remarkable career of The Black Fox star.

One of these interviewees is American actress Glenn Close, who says: “I always felt that if Chris was still around, Robin would still be alive.”

It’s not the first time Close has shed light on the friendship between the two, once calling their relationship “the stuff of legends,” at the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s annual ‘A Magical Evening’ Gala, in 2017.

She also said she saw the pair being “on top of the world” throughout their decades-long friendship.

The pair studied and roomed together at New York’s Juilliard School from 1973 and stayed extremely close friends throughout their successful careers.

In 2017, the 101 Dalmatians star also gave an insight into the ‘wild’ weekends the two would spend together, as Reeve would ‘fly himself and Robin away’ on a Friday night in his own plane.

“On Sunday, late afternoon, Chris would swoop back in and deliver Robin back – I have to say a little worse for wear,” the movie star chuckled.

Christopher Reeve’s son recalls his emotional Oscars speech

One year after Reeve’s terrible accident, he made his first public appearance at the Oscars in 1996.

The actor was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia, the star was left paralyzed and in a wheelchair and relied on a ventilator for the rest of his life.

Despite this, he made an appearance at the prestigious awards show, bringing the audience to tears.

His eldest son, Matthew Reeve, has recently opened up about the emotional moment, that happened when he was 16/17 years old.

“I remember I was in London, it was a school night and we stayed up until three or four in the morning to watch it. And it was absolutely incredible,” he told PEOPLE.

Matthew then went on to explain how the thing that stuck with him the most. “After that incredible warm welcome and that very long ovation that he received, his introduction — he followed it up with a wonderful speech about how cinema and movies are at their best when they not only entertain, but they inform and educate and address issues.”
